Naga Jolokia Hits Random News
If anyone ever needed more proof that India is the hottest, this is it. The Naga or Bhut Jolokia from north-eastern India is the hottest chilli in
The world, as it clocked a whopping 1,001,304 scoville heat units when tested at the New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute recently. Professor Paul Bosland grew the three hottest contenders for the Mirchi Maharaja crown in controlled environments and then tested them for heat.
The small, stocky Naga Jolokia kayoed the Red Savina the reigning chilli, whose highest Scoville rating was 577,000 units. So India’s defence research laboratory has reason to smile as they were the first to ‘discover’ this Naga warrior in Tezpur in 2000, the same year Japanese scientists writing in Current Science also noted its potential as a riot control agent! But popular recognition of the hottest little chilli pepper in the world came with the Guinness Book’s endorsement earlier, and better known chillies have had to step aside.(please see Scoville post)
